Cricket

Two weeks ago Danny came to our school and he showed us how to play cricket. Isabella liked hitting the ball. Peter N liked hitting the ball as well. Charlotte liked playing snowball tag. Anika liked giving the balls to other children. We thought Danny was cool!

Walkathon

Last week our school had a walkathon to get fit and to get some money for more sports equipment. Most people thought it was fun. We walked around the streets near our school lots of times. Each time we walked around we stopped at the bus bay and got a stamp. These are some of the things we liked:

  • getting lots of stamps
  • some mums and dads walking with us
  • some parents helping or watching
  • going round lots of times - Charlotte went round six times!
  • stopping for a drink
  • walking with our friends
  • walking with our teachers
  • walking fast!

Athletics Day

Last week we had Athletics Day at school. We all tried our best in all the events. We did high jump, ball throw, relay races, frisbee throw, long jump and sprints. Lots of our parents and grandparents came to watch us. These are some of our favourite parts of the day ....
  • running in the races because we ran fast
  • throwing the frisbees because it was fun
  • high jumped because some of us practised at home
  • throwing balls because they went a long way
  • the sausage sizzle because they were yummy

Visit to Playcentre

Last week we visited West Melton Playcentre and we had lots of fun there. Our favourite activities were:

  • riding the bikes

  • going upside-down on the swing ropes

  • building things on the workbenches

  • digging in the sandpit and smoothing out roads

  • working the petrol pump

We want to say a big thank you to Pam and the children at the Playcentre for letting us come and sharing their wonderful place with us. Also, thank you to the mums who helped us cross the big busy road and kept us safe.

computer art

Last term lots of us drew pictures of Hotpotch on the computer. Hotpotch is a little character from a book who has different parts on his body that look like other animals. He is a bit like a patchwork animal.

We used the Paint program to do our drawings. At first it was hard, but we all liked doing this art because ...

  • it was easy to draw big pictures or little pictures

  • we liked all the colours

  • it was easy to colour in the picture

  • some of us drew pictures on our home computers too

We think drawing on the computer is fun!

Ella and the Kaitiaki

Last week we went up to the West Melton Hall to see a show called Ella and the Kaitiaki.

Ella’s Dad wanted her to dump their rubbish under a beautiful tree every day. The kaitiaki, guardians who look after the tree, didn’t like that idea because the rubbish might kill the tree and the worms. The kiwi needed worms to eat and if the rubbish was dumped under the tree there would be no worms, and then the kiwi might die too.

Ella thought about the problem and she decided to recycle and compost the rubbish instead.

We loved the show. The singing was great.

Jump Jam

Last week all the children in the Junior School and Learning Community 1 had lots of fun doing Jump Jam. Bryn and Zac's mum, and lots of children from Learning Community 1, showed us how to do Jump Jam.

We did lots of different songs and dances. Liam liked the slithering snake routine the best. Rachel, Zita, Zane and Jessica liked Shrek the best.

We thought it was fun dancing. Some people got puffed. The teachers did some of the dancing too. Some parents came to watch but they didn't dance. We thought the Learning Community 1 dancers were great!

Looking at the worm farm

Last week Mr Howley showed us all the worm compost inside the worm farm. Inside the compost were lots of tiger worms. The worms made compost out of food scraps from our lunchboxes, like apple cores, banana skins, crusts, and pear cores.

Mr Howley is going to put the worm compost onto the children's garden to make the flowers and vegetables grow better.

Mr Howley also showed us the compost bins. If we get too many food scraps for the worm farm we can put them in the compost bins instead. Mr Howley needs lots of compost for the school gardens.

worm farm

Children have been collecting food waste from their lunch boxes every day to put in the worm farm. They are very responsible people remembering to do this every day. This means there is less rubbish for our bins and less rubbish to take home. The worms make the food waste into worm poo for the garden.
